About Gravity Marble
Gravity Marble is a tilting maze where the maze is also a song. A glass marble sits on a stone table. You press and hold, the table leans toward your finger, and the marble rolls. Each stone along the one path through the maze holds a single note of a nursery rhyme, so rolling from the start to the socket plays the tune from the first note to the last.
What makes it different is that the maze is built to fit the song. The path has exactly as many stones as the rhyme has notes. The last stone is the last note, and the maze changes shape for every tune.
How it works
Hold anywhere on the screen. The marble rolls toward the point you are holding, and the farther your finger is from the marble, the steeper the lean. Hold close and it creeps. Hold far away and it picks up speed, up to a limit. Let go and the table levels. The marble keeps its momentum and coasts to a stop.
Walls are soft. The marble bounces off them with a bit of give and a quiet knock, and a gentle bump sounds quieter than a hard one. The walls close off every side of the path, so the stones come one after another with no shortcuts.
- A note sounds each time the marble enters a new stone, so rolling backward plays the tune in reverse.
- Your speed sets the tempo. Roll slowly for a lullaby, quickly for a hop.
- When the marble reaches the socket, a short chord plays and a tap brings up the next maze.
Tips
- Aim at the marble, not past it. Holding just outside it gives a light, precise lean.
- Lift your finger before a corner. The marble coasts, and you steer again from a stop.
- Shorter tunes make a good warm-up. Hot Cross Buns has only 17 stones.
- Roll back over a few stones on purpose and listen to the tune run backward.
Why it feels satisfying
The marble responds to your hand with a smooth, weighty roll, and then the music rewards you. Each note is a soft bell-like sine tone with a faint overtone above it, so a slow roll sounds like a music box. Even the wall knocks are tuned low and kept quiet, so a clumsy run still sounds pleasant.
Questions
Can I pick which rhyme I play?
Not directly. The rhymes come in a fixed order, starting with Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and Hot Cross Buns. There are 18 in all. After the last one, the tunes start again with new maze layouts.
Why does the tune sound wrong when I go back?
Each stone plays its note when you enter it, in whatever order you cross them. Going backward gives you the rhyme in reverse. Roll forward again to hear it the right way round.
