About Joyride
Joyride is an easygoing drive over soft green hills in a small cartoon car. You roll to the right, bounce over bumps, scoop up coins, and watch the sky slowly change around you. The road never ends, so you can drive as far as you like.
It is a toy about momentum. The car has real weight: it rolls, coasts, pitches nose-up on a climb, and sails off crests. There are no enemies and no clock.
How it works
The ground is mostly gentle rolling land with a hill every so often. Some hills are small bumps and others are real launch ramps.
Controls
- Desktop: hold Right Arrow, D, or Space to accelerate. Left Arrow or A brakes and reverses. Up/W lifts the nose and Down/S pushes it down.
- Touch: four round buttons sit on screen. A left arrow and right arrow (brake and gas) are at the bottom corners, and up and down arrows sit in the middle.
The up and down controls tilt the car. On the ground they are strong enough for a wheelie. In the air they are gentle, so you use them to line up a landing with the slope below.
If you take a hill too fast and land badly, or lean too far, the car can roll over. After it stays flipped for a moment the screen flashes with “tipped over!” and you are placed back at the start. Your total coins are kept and your best distance is saved. Coins on the road come back.
Tips
- Let off the gas on steep downhill crests. Coasting keeps the car planted.
- Use a little up-tilt as you leave a hill, then tap down just before landing.
- Wheelies are easy on flat ground, but don’t hold them on a climb. The car will tip backward.
- Building speed on the flat before a hill gives the longest jumps.
Why it feels good to play
Joyride is built around the feel of the car. The suspension is soft and slow, so the body bobs and settles instead of snapping. The engine hum rises in pitch as you speed up and drops to a quiet idle when you let go. Coins make a bright blip, and landings from a jump kick up small puffs of dust. The scenery drifts from daytime meadow to sunset to a starry night, with hot-air balloons floating in the distance.
Questions
What happens when I tip over?
You restart from the beginning of the road. The coins you have already banked stay, and so does your best distance.
How far can I go?
The road is generated forever. The day, sunset, and night cycle repeats about every 3,400 meters.
Does the game remember my progress?
Yes, in your browser. It saves your best distance and your total coin count every few seconds.
